Full attendance at school is vital in order for your child to receive the very best education and outcomes. At Burton End, we strive for all of our children to attend school every day. We understand that sometimes children are too unwell to come to school, if this is the case- please follow the guidelines below for notifying the school of that absence

If your child is too unwell to attend school, or if you wish them to be excused on any occasion from a particular activity due to health reasons, it is essential that you phone, call in, or send a note. This needs to happen as early as possible in the morning, so these children can be marked correctly on the class registers.

If your child is suffering from sickness or diarrhoea please allow them to remain at home for forty-eight hours after the last occurrence to reduce the possibility of the spread of infection. When your child is unwell, it can be hard deciding whether to keep them off school. The simple guidelines below should help. Not every illness needs to keep your child from school. If you keep your child away from school, be sure to inform us on the first day of their absence. We ask that you please use common sense when deciding whether or not your child is too ill to attend school. Ask yourself the following questions.

• Is my child well enough to do the activities of the school day?
  If not, keep your child at home.
• Does my child have a condition that could be passed on to other children or school staff?
  If so, keep your child at home.
• Would I take a day off work if I had this condition?
  If so, keep your child at home.

Suffolk Local Authority does not support term time holidays other than in the most exceptional circumstances and request for absence for such holiday should be considered on its merits. Holidays taken without prior permission will be recorded as unauthorised. In the event of your child becoming ill, or having other than a minor accident at school, we will endeavour to contact you immediately. If this is not possible we will act in his or her best interest, obtaining medical advice if necessary.

Medicines should be administered at home except in rare cases of long term medical condition, when special arrangements can be made. 

Asthma Inhalers

Some pupils will need to have inhalers available during school time. If this is the case, then children should be encouraged to take responsibility for them and be able to use them properly. Parents are advised that we require an Asthma form completed and returned to school and that inhalers should be labelled clearly with the child’s name.

Long Term Medication

If medicine is needed on a long term basis, parents will be asked to complete a form which can be obtained from the office, giving consent for a member of staff to administer medicine on their behalf. This medicine must be clearly labelled and the dosage stated.
